Canada first became a diamond producer in 1998 with the discovery of kimberlite pipes deep within the tundra of the Canadian Arctic; North West Territories. Today, The Canadian diamond output is responsible for approximately 15% of the world's supply of rough diamonds. Recognized for their extraordinary gem-quality properties as well as superior ethical and environmental standards, The Canadian diamond has risen to remarkable world-wide demand.
Arctic Diamonds are gaining popularity among consumers across the world as the only guaranteed alternative to “Blood Diamonds” available on the market. Canada has the worlds most ethical and transparent diamond mines.
Canada did not produce diamonds until the late 90s. However, it is now the third largest diamond producer in the world. Currently, there are six diamond mines in Canada but only 4 of them are operational. Here are some interesting facts about arctic diamonds and what makes them so special.
THEY ARE RARE
Canadian diamond mines are located in the most forbidding places in the world. The diamonds were formed in virgin soil for millions of years, without any disruption. Gemologist often grade them as of very fine in quality.
THEY ARE EXCEPTIONAL FEATS
Canadian diamond miners endure challenges that no other miner in the world does. They work in very remote locations cut off from the rest of the world. The mines can be reached by land only during the short “ice road” season, which lasts only about six-ten weeks. Designing, building and operating the mines themselves is an epic achievement.
Surrounded by lakes, the Diavik Diamond Mine is only accessible via a 600km-long ice road (left). A stack of Arctic diamond roughs mined 220km south of the Arctic Circle (center). Arctic regularly produces diamonds that have good clarity and color (right).
THEY ARE ETHICALLY MINED
Canadian mines are the most environmentally conscious mines in the world. The technology used for construction and operations has minimal effect on the environment and the neighboring communities. Also, the mine workers enjoy better working conditions, reasonable compensation and benefits as well as top quality safety standards.
THEY ARE CONFLICT FREE
Canada goes above and beyond the internationally accepted Kimberly process when certifying diamonds as conflict free. Each diamond produced in Canada is given a diamond identification number that refers to its legitimate source. Also, the identification number is laser inscribed on the diamond’s girdle along with Canadian diamond trademarks such as “Taylor bear”, a maple leaf or the words “Ice on Fire”
